Stay in Touch! And the humble garden gnome can also deter many buyers. New research carried out on 6, property buyers has disclosed the least popular garden plants. The results provide an insight into the changing horticultural tastes of the nation and give key pointers for those who want to boost the value of their homes. Gardening experts say that fast growing conifers, such as leylandii, are highly unpopular.

However, even colourful plants like wisteria are not liked because of the maintenance they require. Leylandii, which can grow to 50ft or more in a decade, topped the poll with seven out of 10 home buyers worried about potential complaints from neighbours.

Ivy came second on the list, with 67 per cent of property seekers worried about the potential damage the plants could to brickwork. More than half of those questioned 55 per cent disliked the shooting stems of pampas grass. The study indicates that Britain is becoming a nation of plant snobs, preferring attractive flowers to hardy perennials such as the magnolia 47 per cent and geranium 31 per cent.

Many homeowners consider these flowers old-fashioned, preferring modern, exotic and maintenance-free plants.
